About this book

Barbara Spiel has always found comfort in books. Born in Germany, she flees her home country in the early 1930s as the Nazis rise to power and settles in Madrid, where she opens a bookshop intended as a safe space for young idealists and independent thinkers. When the Spanish Civil War breaks out, Barbara and those around her face immediate danger. She has fallen in love with a Spanish Socialist parliamentarian, and the violence and hatred of the conflict echo her reasons for leaving Germany. Pursued by Stalinist checas, Francoist Fascists, and the German Gestapo, Barbara struggles to maintain her bookstore as a refuge while navigating the uncertainty of war spreading across Spain and Europe. Unable to trust those around her, Barbara must hold onto her dreams and the words in her books as sources of hope and meaning during a time of chaos and terror.
