Perfect for you if...

  • You loved The Nightingale or All the Light We Cannot See and want another sweeping WWII story with complex female characters at its centre.
  • You're drawn to quiet stories about healing and human connection rather than combat narratives or spy plots.
  • You appreciate historical fiction that weaves real historical events (Displaced Persons camps, Nazi horrors) with intimate personal arcs.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer fast-paced plots with high stakes and dramatic twists over character-driven narratives about recovery and resilience.
  • You want detailed accounts of WWII combat or espionage rather than the aftermath and emotional reckoning that follows war.
  • You're looking for a lighter read. This novel deals directly with trauma, loss, and the Holocaust.

About this book

Set in postwar Germany in 1945, this novel follows three women from different parts of the world who arrive to manage a Displaced Persons camp in the aftermath of World War II. Each woman carries her own losses and hopes for renewal. Martha comes from Brooklyn, seeking escape from a violent marriage. Kitty, an orphan from England, arrives hoping the work will connect her to her parents, whom she last saw before the war. Delphine leaves Paris, where she has grieved the deaths of her husband and son at Dachau, seeking to rebuild her life by aiding other victims of Hitler's regime. Responsible for caring for more than two thousand camp residents, the three women rely on one another to endure their circumstances and offer hope to those around them. Through their work among survivors and strangers, they seek the love and closure needed to heal from their troubled pasts.
