Perfect for you if...

  • You're fascinated by true crime that exposes hidden worlds, especially communities that seem peaceful on the surface but harbour dark secrets.
  • You appreciate investigative reporting that goes beyond headlines to reveal the psychology of the people involved and how they justify their actions.
  • You've read about cults, closed communities, or insular religious groups and want to understand how technology and desire can destabilise even the most tradition-bound lives.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You're looking for a cosy mystery or a whodunit where you can guess the killer. This case is solved early; the tension comes from understanding why, not who.
  • You find graphic descriptions of violence or detailed accounts of infidelity distressing. This book doesn't shy away from either.
  • You prefer fiction over non-fiction. This is a meticulously researched true crime account, not a narrative novel.

About this book

Gregg Olsen and Rebecca Morris investigate the 2009 murder of Barbara Weaver, a 30-year-old Amish wife and mother found dead in her bed. Barbara had five children, a home, and her faith, but her husband Eli was drawn to modern technology—cell phones, the Internet, and online relationships. Using the alias "Amish Stud," he engaged with women online and twice left his family before being shunned and welcomed back by the church. Barb Raber, raised Amish but now Conservative Mennonite, provided Eli with a cell phone, laptop, and rides. When Eli began asking people to kill his wife, Barb agreed to help. One night, after Eli left to go fishing, Barb entered the Weaver home and shot Barbara in the chest at close range. The murder was only the third in hundreds of years of Amish life in America. Assistant prosecutor Edna Boyle took on the case to seek justice for Barbara Weaver.
