Perfect for you if...

  • You love historical fiction with strong female characters who quietly transform themselves against the backdrop of wartime constraints.
  • You're drawn to Sara Gruen's character-driven storytelling and atmospheric settings that feel lived-in rather than just described.
  • You enjoy stories about friendship and belonging set in remote, moody locations where the landscape becomes almost a character itself.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You're looking for a fast-paced thriller centred on the monster hunt itself. the Loch Ness mystery is the frame, not the focus.
  • You prefer contemporary settings or stories that stay tightly focused on one dramatic conflict rather than layered, gradual character development.
  • You want a romance where the central relationship is with the love interest. Maddie's growth is the real love story here.

About this book

In January 1945, Madeline Hyde and her husband Ellis face financial hardship when his father, a retired army colonel, cuts them off due to shame over Ellis's inability to serve in the military. To restore his father's favor, Ellis decides to hunt the famous Loch Ness monster—a quest where the Colonel himself has publicly failed. Maddie reluctantly accompanies Ellis and his best friend Hank to a remote village in the Scottish Highlands. As Maddie settles into this unfamiliar world, she develops friendships with the townspeople that gradually expand her perspective beyond her sheltered upbringing. Through these connections, she discovers that circumstances are more complex than they initially appear. As she develops a fuller understanding of herself, Maddie becomes aware of both darker forces surrounding her and unexpected possibilities in her life.
