Perfect for you if...

  • You're drawn to true crime stories where the investigator has a personal stake and emotional connection to the case.
  • You want to understand how a murderer becomes capable of such violence, tracing his life from early warning signs through his crime spree.
  • You appreciate memoirs that blend family history with criminal justice, not just recounting facts but exploring the long aftermath of a single night.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You need resolution that feels conclusive; this is about uncovering truth and finding peace, which won't satisfy those wanting a neat courtroom denouement.
  • You're sensitive to graphic descriptions of sexual violence and murder; the book doesn't shy away from the brutality of what happened.
  • You prefer faster-paced narratives; this is a slow-burn investigation spanning decades, not a quick true crime hit.

About this book

On May 3, 1969, Ed Morrison's brother Michael and his girlfriend Debra Means disappeared after attending their high school prom in Mascoutah. Two days later, their bodies were found near an abandoned strip mine outside town. Marshall Wayne Stauffer had taken them at gunpoint, raped and strangled fifteen-year-old Debbie, and shot eighteen-year-old Mike three times in the back of the head. Nearly fifty years later, Morrison investigates what happened that night. Drawing on interviews with former police investigators, attorneys, judges, a survivor of a similar attack, and prison personnel, he documents the events surrounding the murders and their aftermath. Morrison traces Stauffer's life and crimes, including details about his cross-country crime spree, imprisonment, and death, while exploring the emotional impact of these senseless killings and his own search for answers and resolution.
