Between Light and Shadow

As a child, Beatrice survives a potentially fatal illness during which she experiences an out-of-body event. She subsequently discovers she possesses psychic abilities and knowledge of the future. Seeking a normal life, she uses her gift sparingly as she grows into adulthood, marries, and settles in Harrogate, North Yorkshire. At thirty-four, she becomes a widow responsible for raising her young daughter. In 1895, Beatrice overhears a conversation about a missing boy. Her psychic knowledge reveals his whereabouts, and she feels compelled to inform the police. Dismissed as a crank by the police inspector, she instead meets Oliver Welburn, who is also investigating the disappearance. She initially assumes he is a private investigator, but learns he holds a title and is connected to the missing boy's family. When Beatrice visits Oliver's stately home in Knaresborough, North Yorkshire, their relationship deepens. One evening, she witnesses the ghostly image of her sixteen-year-old daughter, Clara, in a derelict cottage on the estate, seemingly pleading for help. Though Clara is supposedly visiting relatives in London, an urgent telegram soon arrives. Beatrice and Oliver travel to London to search for Clara, where Beatrice discovers she possesses an additional psychic ability in a dangerous realm she has never before explored—one that threatens her life.
