  • You prefer fast-paced plots with clear resolutions and protagonists who triumph over their circumstances.
  • You're looking for uplifting stories or books that centre on successful activism without examining its costs.
  • You find sustained depictions of war, loss, and moral ambiguity emotionally draining rather than illuminating.

About this book

Jaffna, 1981. Sixteen-year-old Sashi dreams of becoming a doctor, but a civil war engulfs her home over the next decade. Her four brothers and their friend K are drawn into the mounting violence. Desperate to help, Sashi accepts K's invitation to work as a medic at a field hospital for the militant Tamil Tigers, who are fighting for a separate homeland for Sri Lanka's Tamil minority following years of state discrimination and violence. After the Tigers murder one of her teachers and Indian peacekeepers commit further atrocities, Sashi questions her position. When a Tamil feminist professor and dissident invites her to join a secret project documenting human rights violations, she embarks on a dangerous path that will transform her life. Set during the early years of Sri Lanka's three-decade civil war, this novel follows one woman's moral journey and explores the lasting impact of war on individuals and families.
