Perfect for you if...

  • You love historical fiction where the protagonist is completely out of their depth and must reinvent themselves to survive, like in The Name of the Rose.
  • You're drawn to epics with real historical settings (medieval Ireland, the Mediterranean, Constantinople) where adventure feels grounded and plausible.
  • You enjoy stories about ordinary men discovering they're capable of extraordinary things, without it feeling like chosen-one fantasy nonsense.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You want pure religious allegory or books that lean heavily into faith as the central theme rather than human agency and choice.
  • You prefer fast-paced, plot-driven narratives; this is a character study wrapped in an expedition, and it takes time to breathe.
  • You're looking for romance as a major plot thread; Aidan's personal connections serve his journey rather than driving it.

About this book

Aidan is born to rule but lives as a scribe in a remote Irish monastery on the edge of Christendom. His quiet life of work and contemplation changes when he is chosen to join a small band of monks on a quest to Byzantium, the fabled eastern city. Their mission is to present the Book of Kells, a beautiful hand-illuminated manuscript, to the Emperor of all Christendom. Aidan's journey by sea and land transforms him into a warrior, sailor, slave, spy, Viking, and Saracen. He travels farther than most men of his time, becoming an ambassador to kings and gaining access to Byzantium's Golden Court. Through these experiences, Aidan ultimately faces the greatest trial: commanding his own destiny.
