Perfect for you if...

  • You enjoy real espionage stories where the protagonists are flawed characters doing extraordinary things outside the rules.
  • You want to understand how Cold War decisions in the 1980s shaped today's geopolitical landscape and Middle Eastern conflicts.
  • You appreciate narrative non-fiction that reads like a thriller, moving between Washington backrooms, CIA headquarters, and the Afghan frontier.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer dry, academic histories with footnotes and scholarly apparatus over a page-turning narrative approach.
  • You're looking for a balanced critique of US foreign policy rather than a story centred on the audacity and charisma of its key players.
  • You want an in-depth examination of Afghan perspectives or the long-term consequences of the conflict, not primarily the American side of the operation.

About this book

Charlie Wilson's War is a true story about a Texas congressman's secret involvement in supporting Afghan resistance against Soviet invasion during the early 1980s. Wilson, known for his social habits, used his position on the House Appropriations Committee to channel hundreds of millions of dollars to Afghan "freedom fighters." Working with CIA operative Gust Avrakotos, who bent agency rules to assist the operation, Wilson helped procure and distribute weapons to the mujahideen. The narrative moves between Washington political circles, CIA headquarters at Langley, international arms dealers' conventions, and the Khyber Pass. Wilson and Avrakotos's efforts contributed to an unlikely Afghan victory against Soviet forces. The book examines this overlooked chapter in the Soviet Union's collapse and the subsequent rise of radical Islam as a new geopolitical force.
