Perfect for you if...

  • You love meticulously researched WWII narratives that feel like thrillers because the stakes were genuinely that high.
  • You're drawn to stories about ordinary people who discover extraordinary resilience under torture and imprisonment.
  • You appreciate the rare book that balances a compelling romance with visceral wartime action without making either feel secondary.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer your WWII stories to stay focused on military strategy rather than the personal, emotional core of the people involved.
  • You struggle with accounts of torture and concentration camp brutality, even when told with literary care.
  • You want a lighthearted read. This is survival and suffering told with unflinching honesty.

About this book

Code Name: Lise tells the true story of Odette Sansom, a British spy who operated in occupied France during World War II. In 1942, Sansom decides to become an SOE agent to support Britain and France. After five failed attempts and a plane crash, she finally lands in occupied France to begin her mission, where she meets her commanding officer, Captain Peter Churchill. As Sansom and Churchill complete missions together, they fall in love. However, they are hunted by German secret police sergeant Hugo Bleicher, who eventually captures them. They are imprisoned in Paris's Fresnes prison and later sent to concentration camps in Germany, where they endure starvation, beatings, and torture. Throughout their ordeal, they maintain hope and protect the identities of their colleagues. Larry Loftis weaves together the romance between Sansom and Churchill with the pursuit by Sergeant Bleicher, presenting a portrait of courage, patriotism, and love during one of history's darkest periods.
