In 3414 AD, Earth has become severely overpopulated. The worldwide government has implemented a system where each person lives only one day per week; for the other six days, citizens are placed in suspended animation called "stoning." All activities are closely monitored to maintain this system. Jeff Caird is an "immer"—a rebel working to infiltrate the government and reduce surveillance on citizens. He is also a "daybreaker," remaining conscious all seven days of the week while others are stoned. To avoid detection, Jeff maintains seven separate identities, each with its own job, family, and social connections, and delivers messages between rebel cells. When the strain of managing multiple lives becomes unsustainable, the rebel organization views Jeff as a liability and marks him for elimination. Now hunted by both his fellow rebels and the authoritarian government—which considers his mental state incurable and punishable by death—Jeff must fight for survival in a society built on total control.
