Perfect for you if...

  • You enjoy Golden Age mysteries where the puzzle is as important as the whodunit, and you appreciate authors who play fair with clues scattered throughout the narrative.
  • You're drawn to political thrillers set in British institutions, especially ones where institutional power and hidden agendas create believable motive and opportunity.
  • You like twist endings that recontextualise what you thought you knew, and you appreciate an author confident enough to surprise you twice over.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer fast-paced modern crime fiction with forensic detail and procedural authenticity, as this relies on the logic of 1920s detection.
  • You want character depth and emotional investment in protagonists, as Berkeley's approach is more puzzle-focused than psychologically introspective.
  • You're uncomfortable with colonial-era politics and the casual attitudes toward Indian independence that reflect the book's period setting.

About this book

In this Golden Age British mystery, Anthony Berkeley delivers a political thriller centered on a shocking assassination in the House of Commons. During a speech introducing a controversial bill, the Secretary of State for India collapses and dies. What initially appears to be a stroke is revealed to be murder by poison, administered within Parliament itself. Lord Arthur Linton, the victim's associate, undertakes an investigation to identify the killer. He begins by examining a threatening letter sent before the speech—initially dismissed as a prank but later confirmed as a genuine warning from violent terrorists seeking to free India from British rule. With every member of Parliament now under suspicion, Linton must uncover treason in high places to prevent further killings that could target the Prime Minister and destabilize the country.
