Designed to Lead: The Church and Leadership Development

Most churches do not intentionally and consistently develop leaders. When leaders do emerge, it often happens by accident rather than through deliberate effort. Eric Geiger and Kevin Peck argue that churches successfully producing leaders share three key elements: a strong conviction to develop leaders, a healthy culture that supports leadership development, and practical systems to intentionally build leaders. All three components are necessary for leaders to be formed through local church ministry. According to the authors, God has historically designed creation to be led by His covenant people and has determined what His people should do with that leadership responsibility. Whether called to lead in the home, workplace, church, or community, those called by God are called to lead others to worship the glory of God in Jesus Christ. The authors contend that God has designed His people to lead.
