Perfect for you if...

  • You love historical thrillers that reimagine famous events from unexpected angles and aren't afraid to ask 'what if'.
  • You're drawn to outlaw stories that treat their subjects as complex people, not just villains or legends.
  • You want a fast-paced read that doesn't demand 400 pages—Higgins tells this one lean and tight.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You need extensive historical accuracy and get bothered by authors taking liberties with real events.
  • You prefer character depth and introspection over plot momentum and survival stakes.
  • You're looking for a sweeping epic; at 191 pages, this is a sprint, not a marathon.

About this book

A novel set during the final days of John Dillinger, America's most notorious bank robber. In 1934, following his dramatic escape from an Indiana jail, Dillinger's whereabouts became uncertain. Reports placed him in New York, London, New Orleans, and California, though the FBI eventually located and killed him in Chicago. Speculation about his movements during those final months persisted. In Jack Higgins's account, Dillinger flees to Mexico, where his search for freedom brings him into contact with criminals far more dangerous than the federal agents pursuing him. The narrative follows Dillinger's final period as he encounters bloodthirsty bandits and corrupt police officers.
