Perfect for you if...

  • You want to understand the human behind the icon, not just his equations and wild hair.
  • You appreciate biographies grounded in primary sources, including newly discovered letters that reshape how we see famous figures.
  • You're curious about how brilliant scientists grapple with the moral weight of their discoveries.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You're looking for a deep dive into relativity itself. Neffe contextualises the science but doesn't make this a physics textbook.
  • You prefer hagiography. This is a probing portrait that shows Einstein's flaws alongside his genius.
  • You want a quick read. At 475 pages with scholarly depth, this rewards patience rather than skimming.

About this book

Albert Einstein, born in Ulm, Germany, in 1879, is known for his theory of relativity and significant contributions to quantum mechanics and cosmology. He received the Nobel Prize in 1921. Einstein identified himself as a pacifist, humanist, and democratic socialist later in life, and was concerned with how his scientific work affected society. Much of Einstein's life has become legendary through popular culture, advertisements, theater, and fiction. In this biography, Jürgen Neffe examines the person behind these myths. The book includes previously unpublished letters from Einstein to his sons that provide insight into his role as a father. Drawing on a background in science, Neffe describes Einstein's contributions to scientific knowledge and places them within the context of the turbulent era in which he lived and worked.
