About this book

Jim Feldster is a tall man known for his skill at milking cows and his involvement in numerous local organizations in Balaclava County. His wife, Mirelle, is a gossip prone to hysteria—a fact that explains his perfect attendance at lodge meetings. One night, Peter and Helen Shandy, academics who live nearby, are awakened at 2:47 a.m. by Mirelle's screams. Jim has not returned home, and Mirelle fears the worst. Peter investigates Jim's disappearance, consulting his lodge brothers and searching for clues, but finds little to go on. The situation becomes more complicated when a mystery author arrives in town and Mirelle is found murdered. As Peter continues his investigation, he begins to suspect that Jim Feldster may not be the respectable figure he has appeared to be.
