On July 18, 2014, 41-year-old Florida State law professor Dan Markel was shot twice in the head in his garage shortly after dropping his sons at preschool. A devoted father and accomplished criminal law scholar, Markel's murder initially went unsolved for nearly two years. The Tallahassee Police and FBI eventually arrested two career criminals from Miami who had driven 10 hours to commit the killing. Investigators examined whether Markel's ex-wife Wendi Adelson and her South Florida family orchestrated the crime.
