Twenty-two years ago, Claire Campbell's older sister Natalie disappeared shortly after turning eighteen. Blood was found in a car, a man was arrested, and the case closed. Since then, Claire has built a career as an investigative journalist in the city, attempting to distance herself from the trauma. An unexpected call from her father forces her to return home. Facing a long summer in her childhood home with her estranged mother, Claire accepts a seasonal job at Galloway Farm, a muscadine vineyard in coastal South Carolina near where she grew up. The vineyard seems like an ideal retreat—a place where Natalie had appeared happy in her final summer before vanishing. Shortly after arriving, Claire discovers an old diary belonging to one of the vineyard's owners. What begins as an account of youthful rebellion and romance gradually reveals details of various unsolved crimes. As Claire becomes increasingly absorbed in the diary's contents, she begins to suspect a connection between these crimes and her sister's disappearance. What was meant to be a healing escape becomes an immersion into her own dark past.
