Perfect for you if...

  • You appreciate deeply researched military history that centres individual soldiers rather than generals and strategy.
  • You want to understand the Korean War beyond the textbooks, through the real stories of men who fought there.
  • You're drawn to stories of ordinary people doing extraordinary things under extreme duress.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer fictional narratives over historical accounts, even when they're written with cinematic flair.
  • You're looking for a broad overview of the Korean War rather than a deep dive into one company's experience.
  • You'd rather avoid graphic descriptions of combat and the physical and psychological toll of continuous warfare.

About this book

Give Me Tomorrow tells the story of George Company, a Marine unit that saw extensive combat during the Korean War. Formed in 1950 to meet urgent military needs, the company consisted largely of inexperienced troops rushed through training. The unit included diverse members: a Native American soldier seeking to earn his warrior status, a Southern recruit from Tennessee, a Northern reporter-turned-Marine, and twin brothers who embodied brotherhood. After landing at Inchon and fighting through Seoul, George Company—nicknamed "Bloody George" for its heavy casualties and decorated service—was positioned at the Chosin Reservoir. There, the company faced Chinese forces numbering roughly ten times their own strength. The book centers on a famous photograph of a bloodied Marine who, when asked what he wished for, replied simply: "Give me tomorrow." Patrick K. O'Donnell's account draws on extensive research to document the company's experiences across some of the Korean War's most brutal battles. The book presents the previously untold history of this highly decorated yet largely unrecognized unit.
