Perfect for you if...

  • You're fascinated by corporate power dynamics and want the unvarnished story of how ambition and infighting hollow out institutions from within.
  • You enjoy financial history told through the lens of personalities rather than spreadsheets, with access to the conversations and boardroom decisions others never see.
  • You remember 2008 and wonder how a 125-year-old bank with the world's smartest investors managed to implode so spectacularly.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You want a straightforward explanation of mortgage derivatives and financial instruments. This is about people and ego, not balance sheets.
  • You prefer narrative fiction over meticulously documented fact. Auletta builds drama through research, not invented dialogue.
  • You're looking for solutions or lessons about how to prevent future crashes. This is a forensic autopsy, not a roadmap forward.

About this book

In 1983, Lew Glucksman, co-CEO of Lehman Brothers, demanded the resignation of chairman Pete Peterson, with whom he had long disagreed over the company's management. Peterson, who had led Lehman from near collapse to record profits over the previous decade, agreed to step down. Ken Auletta's meticulously researched account details the turmoil, infighting, and power struggles that led to Peterson's departure and Lehman's eventual sale. Set against the backdrop of the 1980s stock exchange, where traders made and lost millions daily, the narrative follows the conflict between bankers, traders, and executives driven by greed, envy, and ego. Based on hundreds of hours of interviews and access to private company records, Auletta provides a thorough account of pivotal events that influenced Lehman until its collapse in 2008.
