Gutenberg's Apprentice: A Novel

Gutenberg's Apprentice is a novel about the invention of the printing press in 15th-century Europe. Peter Schoeffer, an ambitious young scribe working in Paris, is summoned home to Mainz by his foster father Johann Fust, a wealthy merchant and bookseller. Fust has financed the workshop of Johann Gutenberg, an inventor who has created a printing press—a revolutionary method of bookmaking that some view as blasphemous. Fust orders Peter to become Gutenberg's apprentice. Initially resentful about abandoning his prestigious career, Peter gradually develops admiration for Gutenberg and commits to their ambitious project: printing copies of the Holy Bible. The venture faces significant obstacles, including mechanical difficulties and opposition from the Catholic Church. Caught between Gutenberg's genius and Fust's merchant interests, between old and new methods, Peter and the men around him must overcome overwhelming challenges. The novel explores invention, intrigue, and betrayal through the lives of the three men central to making the printing press possible, drawing parallels between 15th-century Europe and the digital media landscape of the twenty-first century.
