Perfect for you if...

  • You love multigenerational sagas that trace a family's arc across decades and continents, watching ordinary people navigate extraordinary historical moments.
  • You're drawn to richly detailed period fiction that captures the sensory experience of a specific era, especially the industrial boom and cultural clash of early 1900s America.
  • You appreciate novels where real historical figures and events (Edison, Roosevelt, the Pullman Strike) weave naturally into the characters' lives rather than feeling like window dressing.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer intimate character studies over sweeping historical narratives. This book's scope is deliberately broad, and some supporting characters get less depth than others.
  • You find Victorian-era family dynamics frustrating. Joe Crown's iron-fisted control and his children's rebellion against it are central tensions, and they can feel restrictive and dated.
  • You want fast-paced plot mechanics. Homeland takes its time building atmosphere and allowing characters to live through their world rather than rushing from crisis to crisis.

About this book

The first book in The Crown Family Saga follows Pauli Kroner, a young German immigrant who arrives in America from Berlin and joins his wealthy uncle in Chicago. His uncle, Joe Crown, is a self-made brewery tycoon who runs his household with strict control, despite having rebellious children and a wife seeking independence. Pauli seeks to build his own life and pursues a destiny in the early motion picture industry. Set against the backdrop of early 20th-century America, the novel depicts the Crown family—relatives both close and distant—navigating a transformative era. Pauli witnesses the Pullman Strike and experiences an unrequited love while encountering historical figures including Theodore Roosevelt, Thomas Edison, and Buffalo Bill. The narrative weaves together family drama with the social and technological changes of turn-of-the-century America. Named a New York Times Notable Book, the novel is noted for its period detail and depiction of the era's sounds, smells, and tastes. This ebook includes an illustrated biography of John Jakes with rare images from his personal collection.
