House of Chains follows two interconnected storylines in the Malazan Empire. In Northern Genabackis, a raiding party of tribal warriors descends from the mountains, with one warrior named Karsa Orlong beginning a path toward an extraordinary destiny. Years later, in the aftermath of the Chain of Dogs, Tavore arrives as the Adjunct to the Empress at Seven Cities, the last remaining Malazan stronghold. She must transform twelve thousand soldiers—mostly raw recruits with a few veterans of Coltaine's legendary march—into a force capable of confronting Sha'ik's Whirlwind rebellion in the Holy Desert. Meanwhile, Sha'ik's warlords struggle for power within the rebellion itself, while Sha'ik is haunted by knowledge of her nemesis: her own sister, Tavore. This novel continues the Malazan Book of the Fallen series.
