Perfect for you if...

  • You're interested in memoir that doesn't take itself too seriously but tackles real questions about fitting in and identity.
  • You appreciate comedy writers who use humour as a tool for social commentary rather than just entertainment.
  • You're curious about the immigrant experience and hyphenated identities, but want something genuinely funny rather than heavy-handed.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer memoir that stays in a single chronological narrative; this is a collection of essays jumping between different moments and ideas.
  • You're looking for a traditionally structured autobiography with clear character arcs and plot progression.
  • You want memoir that avoids comedy and leans entirely into earnestness.

About this book

Negin Farsad, writer, director, and star of the documentary The Muslims are Coming!, presents a memoir in essays about her experience growing up Iranian-American in a post-9/11 world and using comedy to address racism. Farsad is an Iranian-American-Muslim stand-up comedian who believes jokes can drive social change. In this book, she shares personal stories about growing up as an outsider in American culture. She examines race, identity, and stereotypes with candor and humor, exploring questions like what it means to have a hyphenated identity and how to combat racism and exclusion. She also considers what happens when white culture defines the broader culture, and touches on topics ranging from tetherball and Duck Dynasty to wine slushies.
