Perfect for you if...

  • You love the golden age of American racing and want the insider's view from someone who lived it, not a journalist's retelling.
  • You're fascinated by how iconic cars like the AC Cobra and Ford GT were actually built, by the people who sketched and welded them.
  • You appreciate memoir that puts you in the room with legends like Dan Gurney and Ken Miles without needing to be a gear-head first.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You want a straightforward racing narrative with clear plot arcs. This is episodic memories and technical detail, not a racing thriller.
  • You're looking for deep psychological insight into Carroll Shelby's character. This is about his workshop culture and what he built, not his inner life.
  • You prefer books that focus entirely on one driver's championship fight. This spans multiple people and projects across a busy three-year period.

About this book

In the late 1950s, John Morton developed a passion for sports car racing. In 1962, he enrolled in the Shelby School of High Performance Driving. After his final class, Morton asked Carroll Shelby if he could work for the newly formed Shelby American. Shelby hired him on the spot, and Morton left college to begin his racing career. Over the next three years, Morton witnessed firsthand the development of one of the 1960s' most iconic sports car builders and racing teams. His account includes perspectives from key Shelby American personnel: designer Pete Brock, fabricator Phil Remington, and drivers Dan Gurney, Ken Miles, Bob Bondurant, and Phil Hill. The company produced notable vehicles including the AC Cobra, Mustang GT350, Ford GT, and Daytona Coupe. This book combines Morton's personal narrative with recollections from other Shelby staffers of the era, supported by historic photography, to tell the story of Carroll Shelby and his racing operation.
