Perfect for you if...

  • You enjoy academic mysteries where small towns harbour genuine intrigue beneath their respectable surface.
  • You like detective duos with complementary skills: one scholarly, one practical, bouncing off each other's insights.
  • You appreciate mysteries rooted in specific places and histories, where location feels like a character itself.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You want fast-paced thrillers with constant action; this is cerebral and methodical.
  • You're looking for standalone mysteries; this is book 11 in a series and assumes familiarity with Roger and Philip Knight.
  • You prefer contemporary settings; the Civil War backstory and traditional mystery structure may feel historical rather than current.

About this book

Roger Knight, a professor of Catholic studies, and his brother Philip, a semi-retired private investigator, are at Notre Dame as the university prepares for a football game against Georgia Tech. When Notre Dame's Civil War history becomes a point of contention, two Southern student brothers commit a prank in response, nearly 150 years after the conflict. Both claim responsibility for the vandalism, though only one could have actually done it. By sharing an alibi between them, they hope to avoid expulsion. However, the brothers soon become suspects in an unrelated murder case. Roger and Philip must solve the crime, or the students will face consequences far worse than academic dismissal. The case forces the Knights to confront how the distant past continues to influence the present.
