Perfect for you if...

  • You love music history and want the real story behind the figures who shaped jazz, not the sanitised versions in textbooks.
  • You're drawn to biographies of complicated men who changed culture but never got their due recognition during their lifetimes.
  • You appreciate deep dives into early 20th-century New Orleans and Chicago, where the grit and detail matter as much as the narrative.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You want a straightforward rags-to-riches story because Morton's life is messier and darker than that arc allows.
  • You're not interested in the technical or compositional side of music, only the personal drama.
  • You prefer light reading about music culture rather than serious historical biography.

About this book

Jelly's Blues recounts the tumultuous life of Jelly Roll Morton (ca. 1885–1941), a virtuoso pianist known for his larger-than-life personality. He composed influential early jazz pieces including "King Porter Stomp" and "New Orleans Blues." By the late 1930s, however, Morton had largely faded from public memory. In 1992, the death of an eccentric memorabilia collector led to the discovery of a significant archive that revealed Morton to be a far more complex and passionate figure than previously understood. Howard Reich's biography offers an immediate and visceral examination of the jazz worlds of New Orleans and Chicago, presenting a definitive account of one of the twentieth century's most important composers.
