About this book

John Brown's Raid examines the failed nighttime attack on the Federal arsenal at Harpers Ferry on October 16, 1859, led by abolitionist John Brown and nineteen men. The raid aimed to initiate a war to end slavery in the United States. After thirty-six hours, the operation failed and Brown was taken prisoner by Virginia. Brown's subsequent trial deepened the divide between North and South over slavery as he defended his violent actions to a national audience. His execution by gallows prompted starkly different responses: Southerners celebrated his death while Northerners viewed it with reverence. Frederick Douglass claimed Brown's raid, not the April 1861 attack in Charleston, marked the first shot of the Civil War. The book traces how Brown's actions, celebrated by figures like Herman Melville and Walt Whitman, contributed to the nation's split roughly one year later. The volume includes maps, images, and a driving and walking tour of sites connected to the raid for modern visitors.
