About this book

Judgment at Appomattox is the final novel in Ralph Peters's five-book series on the Civil War in the East. The story follows the war's closing weeks as Robert E. Lee attempts a desperate gamble that fails. Ulysses S. Grant pursues Lee's army around Petersburg, Virginia, forcing a skillful Confederate withdrawal. Richmond falls as Lee's exhausted troops race to preserve the Confederacy, but Grant is determined not to let Lee escape. The narrative centers on combat across southern Virginia as armies converge on a country courthouse, featuring figures including John Brown Gordon, Phillip Sheridan, James Longstreet, and Francis Channing Barlow. Peters presents the final stages of fighting through the perspectives of soldiers ranging from an Irish-immigrant private in gray to young generals adapting to modern warfare. The novel combines literary narrative with historical detail to depict the Civil War's last combat episodes. It concludes Peters's acclaimed series on the Eastern Theater of the war.
