About this book

Kings and Pawns examines the lives of Jackie Robinson and Paul Robeson, two prominent Black Americans whose paths were shaped by the Cold War. The book centers on two pivotal moments involving the House Un-American Activities Committee. On July 18, 1949, Robinson, the Brooklyn Dodgers star who integrated baseball, testified before HUAC to discredit Robeson, a legendary athlete, baritone, and actor. At that time, Robinson was the most famous Black man in America, while Robeson had previously held that distinction. Robinson's testimony marked a defining moment in his life and significantly damaged Robeson's reputation. Seven years later, on June 12, 1956, during the final phase of McCarthyism, Robeson—barred from leaving the United States—appeared before HUAC again in a final confrontation. These two events illustrate the tension within Black America between patriotism and protest. Robinson and Robeson represented opposing responses to a country that demanded loyalty without offering equality. The book explores how both men were ultimately harmed by these forces. Bryant argues the story remains relevant today, reflecting ongoing debates about government overreach, civil liberties, and Cold War-era accusations of disloyalty.
