About this book

In 1863, during the Civil War, twelve-year-old Danny O'Carolan and his sister Kathleen arrive in New York City. Kathleen secures domestic service work for both of them, aiming to protect Danny from being drafted into the US Army as a drummer boy. As Danny navigates the city and demonstrates his Irish dancing abilities, he encounters the diverse neighborhoods of New York. However, the threat of military conscription creates conflict between Irish immigrants and the free Black population, while also deepening tensions between wealthy and poor residents.
