Last Three

Special Agent Emma Last investigates a series of decapitated bodies appearing in Washington, D.C. The case begins when the ghost of Ned, the beheaded brother of Emma's colleague, appears to her. The Violent Crimes Unit then discovers two more headless victims—or possibly four. Over two nights, a crypt raider has exchanged ancient skeletal skulls for freshly severed heads of two unidentified men. The bodies and stolen bones remain missing, and the motive behind these ritualistic crimes is unclear. The victims share only age and orientation in common, making identification difficult without their remains. Emma and her team must determine whether they are dealing with occult activity and uncover the killer's pattern. With the possibility that crimes come in threes, they have limited time to stop another potential murder. The investigation forces Emma to confront questions about love, insanity, and the darkest aspects of human psychology.
