Perfect for you if...

  • You want to read about someone who faced catastrophic illness without self-pity, told with genuine humour and unflinching honesty.
  • You're curious about what drives a public figure to transform personal crisis into a research foundation that's actually changing lives.
  • You appreciate memoirs that don't traffic in inspiration porn but instead show how ordinary resilience actually works.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You're looking for a medical textbook or detailed scientific explanation of Parkinson's disease.
  • You prefer memoirs that are primarily about fame and Hollywood gossip rather than the interior work of acceptance.
  • You need a book that ends with a cure or miraculous recovery.

About this book

In September 1998, Michael J. Fox publicly announced he had been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, a degenerative neurological condition, after secretly managing it for seven years. This memoir recounts his life from childhood in western Canada through his rise to worldwide celebrity in film and television, and focuses particularly on the decade following his diagnosis. Fox describes how he came to accept his condition and, with support from his wife, family, and friends, has dealt with the illness while maintaining his characteristic humor and perspective. He reflects on what Parkinson's has brought to his life: appreciation for his accomplishments and the opportunity to advocate for research and public awareness of the disease. Proceeds from the book support the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, which funds research efforts to find a cure for the millions of people living with the disorder.
