Perfect for you if...

  • You're drawn to memoirs about overcoming adversity and want to understand how community shapes character across generations.
  • You're interested in African American history and stories of resilience that centre ordinary people doing extraordinary things for each other.
  • You're seeking genuine hope and want reminders that faith, generosity, and self-determination still matter in modern America.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You're looking for political insider gossip about the Bush administration. The Oval Office is part of the frame, not the focus.
  • You prefer plot-driven narratives with conflict and resolution. This is a character study rooted in reflection and gratitude.
  • You're sceptical of memoir that leans heavily on spiritual themes and won't engage with faith as a core part of someone's journey.

About this book

Madison Park is a small community in Alabama founded by freed slaves in 1880. Eric L. Motley grew up there and later became a Special Assistant to President George W. Bush. In this memoir, Motley describes how his childhood in Madison Park shaped his values and worldview through lessons in self-determination, hope, and belief in the American dream. Motley recalls the people who influenced him: Aunt Shine, a church matriarch invested in his education; Old Man Salery, who quietly helped his family; his grandparents, who bought him books despite their limited means; and Reverend Brinkley, a man of faith and simple living. The community operated on principles of generosity and mutual support. Motley also addresses difficult aspects of life in Madison Park, including personal stories of racial injustice and segregation. He reflects on how the community taught him about love and faith despite these hardships. The memoir explores the power of faith in God and in one another, and examines how shared values based on love and hope can shape a life and community.
