Perfect for you if...

  • You're fascinated by the Kennedy era and want the story from someone who was actually there, not filtered through historians or journalists.
  • You appreciate memoirs that balance intimacy with restraint, focusing on character and duty rather than scandal.
  • You want to understand how Jackie Kennedy endured unimaginable loss and what gave her the composure that steadied a nation.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You're looking for salacious gossip or behind-the-scenes drama. This is respectful and measured, not tabloid fare.
  • You prefer fast-paced narratives. Hill's account is reflective and often quiet, dwelling on small moments and emotional weight.
  • You have no interest in the Kennedy assassination or early 1960s political history.

About this book

In this memoir, Clint Hill, Jackie Kennedy's personal Secret Service agent, recounts his close relationship with the First Lady during the four years surrounding President John F. Kennedy's assassination. Hill was present for significant moments in the Kennedy family's life, including the birth of John Jr. on November 25, 1960, and the birth and sudden death of Patrick Bouvier Kennedy on August 8, 1963. Hill provides an account of the assassination on November 22, 1963, describing his actions in the presidential limousine at Dealey Plaza. He details his efforts to protect Mrs. Kennedy after the shooting and his vivid memories of that day. The memoir examines Mrs. Kennedy's response during the four days following the assassination and Hill's role as her protector during this period. Kirkus Reviews praised the work for its "clear and honest prose free from salaciousness and gossip." Hill's narrative offers a firsthand perspective on the Kennedy family during both joyful and tragic moments in American history.
