Perfect for you if...

  • You're fascinated by the Civil War's origins and want fresh scholarly perspectives beyond the textbook version.
  • You appreciate short-form essays that let you dip in and out rather than committing to a 600-page narrative.
  • You value primary sources, maps, and contemporary images alongside modern historical analysis.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You want a single coherent narrative arc. This is a collection of standalone pieces, not a continuous story.
  • You're looking for personal accounts or soldier memoirs. Most pieces are analytical rather than first-person testimony.
  • You need deep dives into specific topics. The essays are thoughtful but brief, designed for newspaper serialisation.

About this book

A collection of commentary on the Civil War from The New York Times' Disunion journal, which debuted in November 2010. The journal has published hundreds of original articles and won awards including "Best History Website" from the New Media Institute and the History News Network. Historian Ted Widmer has selected more than one hundred articles covering events from Lincoln's presidential victory through the Emancipation Proclamation. Contributors include modern scholars, journalists, historians, and Civil War experts such as William Freehling, Adam Goodheart, and Edward Ayers. Topics range from Walt Whitman's wartime diary to guerrilla campaigns in Missouri and Kansas. The book also includes new essays by contributors and historians including David Blight, Gary Gallagher, and Drew Gilpin Faust, addressing African-American perspectives on the war, the secession crisis in the Upper South, the war in the West and Texas, international context, and Civil War era cartography. The volume features portraits, contemporary etchings, detailed maps, fifteen additional articles, more than seventy new photos, and downloadable audio recordings.
