About this book

Normandy '44 is a history of Operation Overlord, covering the planning and execution of the Allied campaign to retake France from Germany during World War II. The book examines D-Day on June 6, 1944, and the seventy-six days of fighting in Normandy that followed, drawing on archives and eyewitness accounts to clarify aspects of the campaign often obscured by myth. Holland describes the extensive planning and logistics required to transport hundreds of thousands of troops and supplies across the English Channel, as well as the brutal landings on five beaches and subsequent battles across Normandy's plains, lanes, and hedgerows. The campaign produced daily casualty rates exceeding those of any World War I engagement. The narrative incorporates perspectives from commanders including Eisenhower, Rommel, and Montgomery, alongside accounts from participants such as paratrooper Lieutenant Dick Winters, British tanker Reg Spittles, pilot Archie Maltbie, German ordnance officer Hans Heinze, and French resistance leader Robert Leblanc. The book examines the challenges faced by both sides, including the Allies' confrontation with a disciplined German army and the tactical adjustments required during combat. Holland argues that Allied ingenuity, determination, and material strength, combined with operational skill, ultimately determined the outcome.
