About this book

On Division follows Surie Eckstein, a fifty-seven-year-old woman living on Division Avenue in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, within a Chasidic community. She is a great-grandmother with ten children ranging from thirteen to thirty-nine years old. Her in-laws, postwar immigrants from Romania, live on the first floor of her house, and her daughter Tzila Ruchel lives on the second. Surie and her husband Yidel have a happy marriage and a full life. When Surie becomes pregnant, it becomes a shock and source of shame. She feels exposed and unable to share the news, even with her husband. For the first time in her life, she keeps a secret—one that gradually separates her from her community. Goldie Goldbloom's novel examines one woman's life, her awakening at middle age, and the dynamics of self and collective identity. The book offers a portrait of a long, happy marriage and an examination of life within insular communities. Winner of the 2020 Jewish Fiction Award.
