Geri Molloy is a twenty-eight-year-old investment banker working on London's trading floor. It has been 182 days since her breakup, and she is struggling with vodka and insomnia while channeling her determination into her work, where she has developed a rare talent for numbers and generating significant capital. In January 1991, as war in the Middle East threatens to destabilize the markets, Geri's career faces a critical moment. The firm's most important client is Felix Mann, a reclusive hedge fund manager in Hong Kong who will only work with her. However, Geri is approaching her breaking point, and several rivals are competing for her position. When she becomes entangled in a high-stakes takeover, Felix is willing to participate—but only if Geri agrees to his terms, which come at the cost of her future. The novel was longlisted for the Orange Prize. It explores themes of love and money, the judgments people make of one another, and what it means for a woman to take control of her own life.
