Raphael, Painter in Rome: A Novel

This novel tells the story of Raphael, the Renaissance painter, focusing on a pivotal period when he and Michelangelo were commissioned by Pope Julius II to create major works in Rome. Michelangelo was assigned the Sistine Chapel ceiling while Raphael decorated the pope's private apartments. Orphaned at age eleven, Raphael made a deathbed promise to his father to become the greatest artist in history. Driven by this ambition, he views Michelangelo—creator of the David—as his greatest rival. As Raphael pursues perfection in his work, he contends with internal struggles including desperate ambition, fear of imperfection, and loneliness. Throughout the narrative, Raphael conspires with cardinals, explores the ruins of ancient Rome, and becomes involved with a woman who works as a prostitute and serves as his muse. The novel depicts the two Renaissance masters in competition within the Vatican.
