About this book

In Monte Carlo, an unnamed young woman who works as a lady's maid is proposed to by Maxim de Winter, a wealthy widower. Orphaned and surprised by her sudden fortune, she accepts and marries him. Upon arriving at Manderley, his large estate on the Cornish coast, she discovers that the shadow of his late wife, Rebecca, looms over their marriage, bringing with it a lingering evil that threatens to destroy their relationship. First published in 1938, this novel has remained continuously in print and has been adapted multiple times for television, radio, theater, and film, including the 1940 Alfred Hitchcock film that won the Academy Award for Best Picture and the 2020 Netflix film.
