Perfect for you if...

  • You love espionage thrillers grounded in real historical detail and emotional stakes rather than just tradecraft.
  • You're drawn to stories about women in wartime who had to survive through deception and intelligence rather than force.
  • You appreciate dual-timeline narratives that let you piece together how a person becomes who they are.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You want fast-paced action sequences and high-octane spy craft. Boyd's strength is character and history, not car chases.
  • You prefer standalone novels with clean endings. This one builds its power by living in ambiguity and unresolved tension.
  • You're looking for a feel-good story. The weight of secrets and the cost of survival hangs throughout.

About this book

Restless follows Eva Delectorskaya, a twenty-eight-year-old woman living in Paris in 1939. At her beloved younger brother's funeral, she encounters Lucas Romer, a mysterious Englishman with a secretive connection to her brother's death. Romer recruits Eva to work as a spy, sending her to Scotland for training. After a successful covert operation in Belgium, she is stationed in New York City, where she works to influence American public opinion toward entering World War II. Thirty years later, Eva has reinvented herself as Sally Gilmartin, a respectable widow living in a Cotswold village. Her daughter Ruth knows nothing of her true identity or her espionage past. As Sally's secrets threaten to surface, she must finally confront her dangerous history—and turn to Ruth for help. The novel weaves together Eva's wartime experiences with her present-day struggle to reconcile her hidden past with her current life.
