Perfect for you if...

  • You enjoy multi-generational family sagas that span decades and trace how historical forces reshape individual lives.
  • You appreciate character-driven narratives where morality feels grey rather than black and white, especially when brothers become antagonists.
  • You want sweeping American fiction that captures a specific era (1940s-1960s) with authenticity and social detail.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer fast-paced plots with constant action. This book moves deliberately through years of character development and internal conflict.
  • You dislike books that end ambiguously or leave moral questions unresolved. The Jordache brothers' fates don't offer easy closure.
  • You find dense, 600-plus page novels daunting. This requires patience and commitment to multiple storylines across four decades.

About this book

This novel follows three siblings—Rudy, Tom, and Gretchen Jordache—who grow up in a small town on the Hudson River during the 1940s. Too young to serve in World War II, they are nonetheless shaped by its aftermath. Their father works as the local baker, and their circumstances offer little indication of the lives they will eventually lead. As the narrative unfolds across the decades between the Second World War and Vietnam, each family member confronts the challenges and opportunities of a world marked by conflict and transformed by American commerce and culture. The novel was adapted into a primetime television miniseries and starred Nick Nolte, Peter Strauss, and Susan Blakely. This ebook edition includes an illustrated biography of Irwin Shaw with rare images and previously unpublished documents from the author's estate.
