Perfect for you if...

  • You love narrative histories where competing egos clash against impossible odds, not just dry geographical facts.
  • You're interested in how the imperial era erased non-European contributions to history, especially Sidi Mubarak Bombay's overlooked role.
  • You appreciate Candice Millard's ability to make 19th-century exploration feel urgent and deeply human rather than dusty and academic.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You want a straightforward geographical or scientific account of how the Nile's source was discovered.
  • You prefer fiction over narrative non-fiction, or you find period exploration stories inherently boring.
  • You're looking for a feel-good adventure with heroic resolution rather than a story about ambition, jealousy, and tragic consequences.

About this book

For centuries, the location of the Nile River's source remained unknown. In the 19th century, European powers launched expeditions to map unexplored regions and expand their colonial reach, while interest in ancient Egypt surged. The Royal Geographical Society sent Richard Burton and John Hanning Speke to find the Nile's headwaters for England. Burton was a polyglot soldier, atheist, and iconoclast. Speke was a young aristocratic officer and passionate hunter—temperamentally opposite to Burton. The two clashed from the start. After two years of hardship and illness in the African interior, Burton fell too sick to continue, but Speke pressed on and claimed to have found the source in a large lake he named Lake Victoria. Upon returning to England, Speke took credit and disparaged Burton, who disputed the claim. Speke launched a second expedition to prove himself, and the men became bitter enemies. The day before a planned public debate, Speke shot himself. A third man participated in both expeditions: Sidi Mubarak Bombay, whose contributions were obscured by imperial records. Enslaved and transported from East Africa to India, Bombay eventually returned to Africa and became a guide, using his language skills, resourcefulness, and courage. Without Bombay and others like him who led, carried, and protected the expedition, neither Englishman would have reached the Nile's source or likely survived.
