Perfect for you if...

  • You're fascinated by Cold War history and want the full picture of how America's covert operations came back to haunt the Oval Office.
  • You've read the Watergate basics but want the hidden hand that shaped the scandal: the CIA's role and the leverage game beneath it all.
  • You trust investigative journalists who dig into declassified files and long-overlooked evidence to reframe what you thought you knew.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer narrative-driven political thrillers over meticulously researched historical analysis with competing intelligence interests.
  • You're looking for a Watergate book that focuses on the break-in itself rather than the decades of secret dealings that made it explode.
  • You want a quick summary rather than a deep dive into the murky overlap between presidential power, CIA autonomy, and mutual destruction.

About this book

Scorpions' Dance examines the Watergate scandal through the lens of a power struggle between President Richard Nixon and CIA Director Richard Helms. The two men shared a history dating back decades as Cold War figures, and both possessed knowledge of sensitive matters including the Bay of Pigs invasion and covert American and CIA operations against Fidel Castro and other Latin American leaders. Each held information capable of destroying the other's career. Following the Watergate burglary on June 17, 1972, Nixon sought to halt the FBI's investigation and requested CIA intervention, aware that many of the burglars were former CIA agents, contractors, or long-term assets with access to classified Agency secrets. The two men then engaged in a dangerous standoff, each threatening the other with exposure. One would ultimately resign in disgrace, while the other would face consequences for the secrets he had protected. Based on previously overlooked evidence, this account offers a new perspective on the presidential scandal.
