Perfect for you if...

  • You want epic fantasy with multiple POV characters and intricate plotting that rewards close attention across hundreds of pages.
  • You enjoy high-stakes political drama mixed with supernatural threats and aren't put off by a large cast of secondary characters.
  • You appreciate worldbuilding that treats elves, dwarves, and other races as genuinely alien rather than just human-adjacent.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You prefer fast-paced narratives and find yourself frustrated by slow-burn fantasy that takes time establishing its world.
  • You want a standalone novel or a trilogy at most. This is the first of four substantial books.
  • You're looking for a protagonist to root for immediately. Many characters here are morally grey or unsympathetic in their opening chapters.

About this book

The first volume in an epic fantasy saga set in a land inhabited by humans, elves, and dwarves. For generations, the misty Shadowline has separated human lands from the northern territories of the Qar, ageless inhuman enemies. Now that boundary is shifting outward, threatening to consume Southmarch, the northernmost human kingdom. The Eddon family has ruled Southmarch Castle for centuries, defending against the Qar's return. The royal line faces a critical crisis when King Olin is captured in a distant land, leaving his inexperienced heirs to lead their people through mounting danger. The burden falls heaviest on the two youngest Eddons as the Qar's power spreads across the realm. Southmarch Castle, long called by its ominous name, now faces the possibility of becoming the very thing it was named for.
