In eighteenth-century Vinterstock, Sweden, rival assassins Valour and Petrichor are tasked with hunting down Brandquist, the shadowy leader of the city's illegal magic trade. Both high-ranking members of the Order of Axsten who were raised as orphans, the action-driven Valour and intellectual Petrichor have long despised each other despite their shared training. Their mission is complicated by the fact that no one knows who, where, or what Brandquist is. Matters worsen when Valour is asked to watch over Ingrid Rytterdahl, a clever heiress for whom Valour has long harbored feelings. When Petrichor realizes that Ingrid's knowledge and connections could aid their investigation, he reluctantly agrees to include her in the operation. As the three work to navigate Vinterstock's criminal underworld, they must uncover Brandquist's identity before the crime lord discovers their plans and marks them for death.
