Perfect for you if...

  • You've experienced trauma and want to read about someone who actually rebuilt her life rather than just survived it.
  • You're interested in true crime but want a narrative centred on the survivor's strength, not the killer's notoriety.
  • You work in victim advocacy, counselling, or activism and need stories that validate the long, non-linear path to healing.

Maybe not for you if...

  • You're looking for graphic true crime details or a forensic deep-dive into the killer's methods and capture.
  • You need a comfortable read without confronting sexual violence, murder, or the aftermath of trauma.
  • You prefer fiction or stories with narrative distance from real suffering.

About this book

On August 28, 1997, Holly Dunn and her boyfriend, Chris Maier, were attacked by serial killer Angel Maturino Reséndiz, known as The Railroad Killer, while walking along railroad tracks near the University of Kentucky where Dunn was a junior. Maier was beaten to death; Dunn was stabbed, raped, and left for dead but survived. This memoir documents Dunn's survival of the assault, her role in bringing her attacker to justice, and her subsequent path toward healing. Following the attack, Dunn became a motivational speaker and activist focused on supporting victims of sexual assault and violent crimes. She founded Holly's House in Evansville, Indiana, described as a safe and nurturing space for such victims.
