About this book

This novel centers on three characters whose lives become entangled in post–WWII Brooklyn: Stingo, an aspiring novelist; Nathan, his charismatic but violent Jewish neighbor; and Sophie, an Auschwitz survivor and Nathan's lover. Their relationships build toward revelations of secrets that transform each of them. The narrative explores humanity's capacity for good and evil through Stingo's developing worldliness, Nathan's volatile nature, and Sophie's tragic past. The novel incorporates elements from Styron's own experience alongside themes of the Holocaust and the history of slavery in the American South, presenting itself as a profound human drama. Winner of the National Book Award, the novel is considered a modern classic. This ebook edition includes an illustrated biography of William Styron with original letters, rare photographs, and documents from the Styron family and Duke University Archives.
