Mackenzie Bishop is a Keeper, tasked with guarding the Archive—a vast realm where the dead, called Histories, rest on shelves like books. Each body contains a life story that only Librarians can read. Mac was brought into this world four years ago at age twelve by Da, who has since died. Now she has grown into a ruthless Keeper, responsible for preventing Histories from waking and escaping, work that requires her to lie to those she loves and live with constant danger and loss. When Mac's younger brother also goes missing, she begins questioning the boundary between living and dying. Her troubles deepen when she discovers that someone is deliberately altering Histories and erasing their chapters. If Mac cannot uncover what remains and stop this tampering, the Archive itself may collapse. As she investigates this paranormal conspiracy, she must navigate the thin lines between past and present, love and pain, trust and deceit, and confront unbearable loss.
